Heliodor (Yellow Beryl) Jewelry in Bangkok

Heliodor (Yellow Beryl) Jewelry in Bangkok

Heliodor is yellow beryl, the sunny sister of emerald and aquamarine. Its name means “gift of the sun” in Greek, and it fits: a clean, bright lemon to golden yellow that glows in daylight. It is hard enough to wear every day and often clean to the eye. We set natural heliodor in 925 sterling silver and solid gold at our studio on Sukhumvit 71, Bangkok.

This page covers what heliodor and yellow beryl are, how they compare with other yellow gems, how to wear and care for them, what makes a good stone, how to see the stones at our shop, and how to order in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand.

Heliodor and yellow beryl: one stone, two names

Beryl is the mineral family behind some of the best known gemstones. Green beryl is emerald, blue beryl is aquamarine, pink beryl is morganite, and yellow beryl is heliodor. The yellow comes from a little iron in the crystal.

You will see both names used for the same stone. Some dealers keep “heliodor” for the slightly greenish yellow stones and call the pure golden ones “golden beryl”, but both are yellow beryl, with the same hardness and the same care. On this page we use the names side by side.

The name heliodor was first used for stones found in Namibia in the early twentieth century, from the Greek words for sun and gift. Every stone we set is natural, heliodor included. Some yellow beryl is heated or irradiated to adjust the color; both treatments are common, and if a stone has had any treatment we tell you before you order.

Heliodor and other yellow gems

Citrine is yellow quartz. It is softer at 7 on the Mohs scale, warmer and often more orange, and costs less. Heliodor is a cooler, brighter yellow with more sparkle.

Yellow sapphire is harder at 9 and costs more. If you want a durable yellow with a lighter price, heliodor sits nicely between the two.

Emerald is heliodor’s green relative. Emerald is almost always full of inclusions, while heliodor is often clean to the eye, so it shows the beauty of beryl in a clearer stone.

How to wear and care for heliodor

At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, heliodor is harder than everyday dust, so it keeps its polish in a ring worn daily as well as in pendants and earrings. Like any gemstone, it can chip from a hard knock, so take your ring off for the gym, heavy lifting and gardening.

Clean it in warm soapy water with a soft brush, then rinse and dry. Avoid sudden heat, and skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners if the stone has any inclusions. If it ever needs a polish or a check of the setting, bring it to our shop. Maintenance is free on jewelry we made.

What makes a good heliodor

Color matters most. The most prized stones are a clear, saturated golden yellow. Pale lemon stones are lovely and cost less; a strong green tint or a brownish tone lowers the value.

Clarity is a strength. Most heliodor is clean to the eye, so you can expect a bright, transparent stone. A few show fine needle-like tubes inside, which are a natural mark of beryl.

Cut brings out the glow. Heliodor is often cut in the octagon shape known as the emerald cut, which shows its color in calm, even flashes. Round and oval cuts give more sparkle.

Size deepens the color. Small stones look light lemon; the gold becomes richer in larger stones.

Where heliodor comes from

Heliodor is mined in Brazil, Namibia, Madagascar, Ukraine, Russia, Sri Lanka and Nigeria. Brazil supplies most of the stones on the market today, and Namibia is where the name began. If you want to know the origin of a particular stone, ask us: we offer certified stones, and an uncertified stone can be sent to a gem lab for a report at extra cost.

Heliodor in larger sizes, and how to set it

Many colored stones are hard to find clean above a carat or two. Heliodor is different. Beryl grows in long, often transparent crystals, so clean yellow stones big enough for a cocktail ring or a bold pendant turn up far more often than in most gems. The Smithsonian in Washington displays a faceted heliodor from Brazil of more than two thousand carats, which shows how large the crystals can get. And since the color deepens with size, a larger stone is where heliodor shows its richest gold.

Its hardness makes it easy to set. Prongs suit a daily ring and let in the most light, which matters for paler stones. A bezel, where metal wraps the edge of the stone, is a good choice if you use your hands a lot. The emerald cut, already popular for heliodor, has clipped corners that are less likely to chip than the sharp points of a pear or marquise.

The metal changes how the yellow reads. Gold makes a golden heliodor look warmer and deeper, while 925 sterling silver keeps a lemon stone crisp and cool. If you are unsure, hold the stone against both metals before you decide.

Daylight is where this yellow beryl comes alive, and the cut changes the effect: calm, even flashes from an emerald cut, more sparkle from a round or oval. Once we know heliodor is your interest, more of it is ready for your visit, pale lemon to deep gold, in the cuts and sizes we have.

Heliodor questions we get

Is heliodor the same as yellow beryl?

Yes. Heliodor is yellow beryl. Some dealers use “heliodor” for greenish yellow stones and “golden beryl” for pure golden ones, but they are the same mineral with the same hardness and care.

Is your heliodor natural?

Yes. Every gemstone we set is natural, heliodor included. Some yellow beryl is heated or irradiated to adjust the color, and we tell you before you order if a stone has been treated. We are a member of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association.

Is heliodor related to emerald?

Yes. Both are beryl. Emerald is the green kind, aquamarine the blue and heliodor the yellow. Heliodor is usually much cleaner inside than emerald.

Can I wear a heliodor ring every day?

Yes. Heliodor is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it handles daily wear well. Take it off for the gym and heavy work to avoid hard knocks.

How much does heliodor jewelry cost?

It depends on the quality and carat of the stone you choose, and on the metal. We give you the price before anything is made.

Can I buy just the stone?

Yes. Heliodor is sold as a loose stone too, so you can take it unset. When you want it made into a ring, pendant or earrings, we are happy to set it, now or further down the line.

How long does a heliodor piece take?

7 to 10 working days from your order, because the stones are already here in our shop, then 1 to 3 working days for delivery inside Thailand. We also ship abroad by FedEx.

Every heliodor piece is made to order by our team in Bangkok in 925 sterling silver or solid gold, with a 3-year warranty, free maintenance and free shipping across Thailand.
