Peridot Jewelry in Bangkok

Peridot Jewelry in Bangkok

Peridot is the August birthstone and one of the few gemstones that comes in only one color: green. It is natural, almost never treated, and one of the most affordable gemstones we set, so it suits a first piece of gemstone jewelry as well as a birthday gift. We set natural peridot in 925 sterling silver and solid gold at our studio on Sukhumvit 71, Bangkok.

This page covers what peridot is, how to wear and care for it, what makes a good peridot, how to see the stones at our shop, and how to order in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand.

What peridot is

Peridot is the gem form of a mineral called olivine. Its green comes from iron inside the crystal itself, not from a trace of another element, which is why peridot is always green. The shade runs from a light yellowish green to a deep grass green, and the amount of iron sets where a stone falls in that range.

Almost all peridot on the market is natural and untreated, which is rare among gemstones. Every stone we set is natural, peridot included, and if a stone has had any treatment we tell you before you order.

How to wear and care for peridot

Peridot is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, a little softer than quartz. Everyday dust contains quartz, so over years of daily wear the facets can lose some of their shine. That makes peridot ideal for pendants, earrings and bracelets, which take fewer knocks. A peridot ring is a lovely choice too; take it off for the gym, cleaning and gardening and it will stay bright.

Clean it in warm soapy water with a soft brush, then rinse and dry. Keep it away from ultrasonic and steam cleaners, sudden heat and acids, including strong household cleaners. If it ever needs a polish or a check of the setting, bring it to our shop. Maintenance is free on jewelry we made.

What makes a good peridot

Color matters most. The finest peridot is a pure, bright grass green with little yellow. Most stones lean slightly yellow, which looks fresh and lively in silver. Brownish green is the least valued.

Clarity comes next. A good peridot looks clean to the eye. Under magnification many show a tiny round disc called a “lily pad”, which is a natural mark of peridot.

Size changes the color you see. Small stones look lighter, and the green deepens as the stone gets bigger. A larger peridot is where the color really shows, and it still costs far less than an emerald of the same size.

Cut gives the stone its life. A well proportioned stone sparkles across its whole face, while a shallow one looks washed out in the middle.

Where peridot comes from

The best large peridot comes from northern Pakistan, where a deposit high in the Himalaya was found in the 1990s, and from Myanmar near Mogok. Egypt’s Zabargad island in the Red Sea was the source in ancient times. Today most of the world’s jewelry-size peridot comes from Arizona in the United States and from China, with smaller amounts from Vietnam, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. A few tiny crystals have even arrived on Earth inside meteorites. If you want to know the origin of a particular stone, ask us: we offer certified stones, and an uncertified stone can be sent to a gem lab for a report at extra cost.

The August birthstone

Peridot is the birthstone for August. It is a popular pick for a child born in August, for a partner’s birthday, or as one of the stones in a family ring where each person gets their own month. Our birthstone chart shows all twelve months if you are building a ring or bracelet for the whole family.

Size changes the green you see in a peridot. Small stones look light and fresh, while larger ones show the color in full. Name peridot in your booking and we lay out a longer row of them, yellowish green through grass green, small and large alike, to judge which one sits best in silver or gold.

Walk in any time we are open, or book ahead so Yaron is there to help with the stone, the design and the metal, from 925 silver and gold plating to solid 9K, 14K or 18K gold.

Almost all peridot is natural and untreated, so one loose stone, bought on its own, works as an August birthday gift. No jewelry is needed, though we would be very happy to make a piece for you.

Peridot questions we get

Is your peridot natural?

Yes. Every gemstone we set is natural, peridot included, and peridot is almost never treated. We are a member of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association.

Can I wear a peridot ring every day?

Yes, with a little care. Peridot is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so take the ring off for the gym, cleaning and gardening. Pendants and earrings are the easiest way to wear it daily.

How do I clean peridot jewelry?

Use warm soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse and dry. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and keep it away from acids and sudden heat. We clean and check jewelry we made for free.

How much does peridot jewelry cost at Colors by Love?

It depends on the quality and carat of the stone you choose, and on the metal. We give you the price before anything is made.

What is the difference between peridot and emerald?

Both are green, but they are different minerals. Peridot is a brighter, slightly yellowish green and costs far less. Emerald is a deeper blue-green, harder at 7.5 to 8, and one of the precious stones.

Can I buy just the stone?

Yes. Pick a loose peridot from our trays and take it as it is. We are just as happy to set it in a pendant, earrings or a ring for you, today or at any later time.

How long does a peridot piece take?

7 to 10 working days after you order, then 1 to 3 working days for delivery inside Thailand. We also ship abroad by FedEx.

Every peridot piece is made to order by our team in Bangkok in 925 sterling silver or solid gold, with a 3-year warranty, free maintenance and free shipping across Thailand.
