Your name will appear here in Thai

Thai spells foreign names by sound, so there is often more than one correct spelling. Before we make anything, a Thai member of our team checks the spelling with you.

WEAR IT

Like how it looks? We make it in silver or gold.

Every name here can become a necklace or a ring, made by hand in our Bangkok studio on Sukhumvit 71. We draw it first and send it to you to approve.

How a name becomes Thai

Thai has its own alphabet. There are 44 consonants, and the vowels can sit before a consonant, after it, above it or under it. There is no official spelling for a foreign name, so Thai people write it the way it sounds. That is what this tool does.

A short name usually turns into two or three Thai syllables. Anna becomes แอนนา, John becomes จอห์น, Michael becomes ไมเคิล. Long names and surnames work the same way, one sound at a time.

For initials, spelling checks and how a Thai name is made into a necklace, read our guide on how to write your name in Thai.

Why one name can have two spellings

Thai has several letters for the same sound. There are four ways to write an s sound, for example, and for names people mostly use ส or ซ. So Sarah can be ซาราห์ or ซาร่า, and both are right. One keeps the h at the end, the other is shorter and reads more like a nickname.

English letters that make no sound get their own trick too. Thai has a small mark, ์, that silences a letter. It lets a Thai spelling keep the look of the English one. John is จอห์น: the ห with that mark stands for the silent h. Mark is มาร์ค for the same reason, keeping the r you do not really hear.

If the tool shows other ways to write your name, pick the one you like. None of them is wrong.

The small marks above the letters

Thai is a tonal language with five tones, and the little marks above the letters tell you which tone to use. A name usually picks up one or two of them so it sounds natural to a Thai ear. You do not need to read them to wear them, but they are part of the name. On a necklace we join each mark to the letter below with a fine bridge of metal, so nothing can fall off.

Names that are also words

Plenty of names are ordinary English words, and translation apps get these wrong. Ask one for Rose and you may get the Thai word for a rose flower. Ask for Mark and you may get the word for a sign. This tool spells names by sound and checks the answer, so Rose stays โรส.

Some words are different. If you type Love on its own you get รัก, which is the Thai word for love, because that is almost always what people want on a piece of jewelry.

Numbers and dates

Thai has its own digits as well. Type 2026 and you get ๒๐๒๖. A Thai date on the inside of a ring, or a birth year next to a name, is a quiet detail most people will not even notice is a number.

Questions people ask

Is this the correct way to write my name in Thai?

It is a correct way. Thai spells foreign names by sound, so there can be two or three good spellings. If you are going to wear it, a Thai speaker should look at it first. We do that for every piece we make.

Can I use it for a tattoo?

Use it as a starting point. For anything permanent, ask a native Thai speaker to check the spelling and the marks before you go ahead.

Is the tool free?

Yes. There is no sign up and nothing to install. Type a name, hear it, copy it.

Why does another website spell my name differently?

Because Thai has several letters for the same sound. Both spellings can be right. Choose the one that looks best to you.

Can you make my name in Thai as jewelry?

Yes, that is what we do. Press one of the buttons under the tool and your Thai name comes with you to the product page.
