The Two Natural Gemstones Ring in Octagon and Square puts two step cuts next to each other. The octagon is the classic emerald cut, corners clipped, long flat facets running into the stone. The square sits beside it with the same flat treatment. Step cuts do not throw light the way brilliants do. They show colour instead, deep and even, which is why this is the pairing to choose if you care more about the stone than the flash. Set by hand in our Bangkok studio.
Details and materials
Two step-cut stones sit level with each other on the front of the band, an octagon at 7 x 5mm and a square at 4mm. Figure on around 1.00ct for the octagon and 0.30ct for the square, near enough 1.30ct together, though carat stays approximate because every gem species has its own density.
Step cuts have wide open tables, so a pale stone will look pale and a saturated one will look deep. Both gemstones are 100% natural, eye clean A to AA in emerald, ruby or sapphire, loupe clean AA to AAA across the semi-precious colours. Ring sizes run US 6 to 8.5, others made on request.
The band is 925 sterling silver carrying a 1 micron plated finish. Choose silver, yellow gold, white gold with rhodium or rose gold, and expect 3 years before the colour wants redoing. What is an octagon cut? The emerald cut. Corners trimmed at an angle, long flat facets like steps running down into the stone. It shows colour better than any other cut and hides inclusions worse, so we pick clean stones for it.
Can both stones be the same colour? Yes, and it works well here. Two shades of one stone in two step cuts looks deliberate. Two contrasting colours works too. Tell us at checkout.
